SLTDA – TOURIST BOARD AND CIVIL AVIATION AUTHORITY

SLTDA is the official institution tasked with establishing, positioning, and developing Sri Lanka as a leading destination for international visitors.

SLTDA is responsible for tapping into Sri Lanka’s natural potential to expand and enhance its tourism offering while benefitting investors and supporting communities, in a sustainable manner.

In 1966, the Government of Sri Lanka decided to develop tourism in a planned and systematic manner, after identifying the need to set up an institutional framework. The Ceylon Tourist Board, (created by the Ceylon Tourist Board Act No. 10 of 1966,) and the Ceylon Hotels Corporation, (created by Ceylon Hotels Corporation Act of 1966,) were set up to enable this and Created to promote economic development through the development of foreign tourism, the Ceylon Tourist Board (CTB) was a statutory body that allowed greater freedom in decision making and flexibility in financial management.

The Ceylon Hotels Corporation was a Joint Stock Company with public and private sector involvement. It was intended to be the commercial arm of the Government for the purpose of developing accommodation and other facilities for tourists.

The Tourist Development Act of 1968 provided the Ceylon Tourist Board with the statutory authority to develop tourism in a planned and controlled basis. The Tourist Development Act allowed the Ceylon Tourist Board to obtain land (through compensation) for development purposes.

The Act also conferred powers for the Protection of Highways and Places of Scenic Beauty and vested authority in the Ceylon Tourist Board for the Registration and Classification of Tourist Hotels and all other tourist services.

CERTIFICATIONS

IATA - International Air Transport Association

IATA is the trade association for the world’s airlines, representing some 290 airlines or 82% of total air traffic. Supporting many areas of aviation activity and help formulate industry policy on critical aviation issues

IATA was founded in Havana, Cuba, on 19 April 1945. It is the prime vehicle for inter-airline cooperation in promoting safe, reliable, secure and economical air services for the benefit of the world's consumers.

The international scheduled air transport industry is more than 100 times larger than it was in 1945. Few industries can match the dynamism of that growth, which would have been much less spectacular without the standards, practices and procedures developed within IATA

Why is IATA necessary?

The benefits of being an IATA Accredited Agents are access to approximately 250 IATA airline members using a single standard Sales Agency Agreement. Authorisation to sell international and/or domestic tickets on behalf of the airlines.

Access to IATAs Billing and Settlement Plan (BSP), and BSPlink that together provide a single standard interface for invoicing and payment between the agent and multiple airlines and transport providers. Global travel industry recognition through an IATA Numeric Code that provides a unique identifier for the agent.

Global consumer confidence due to IATA Travel Agents meeting industry standards identifiable by the IATA logo and branding displayed on Travel Agents premises and websites provides standard procedures which ensure fair and uniform standards in all dealings with the airlines.
